Dia memberikan syarat sebuah bangunan itu harus memenuhi 3 syarat yg harus dipenuhi agar yaitu firmitatis utilitatis venustatis = kekokohan, berdaya guna, mempesona. landasan pemikirannya ini selanjutnya merupakan landasan teori berarsitektur klasik di dunia barat dan selanjutnya berkembang ke seluruh dunia sampai saat ini.

Dunia timur dengan segala kearifannya juga memiliki akar arsitektur yg berbeda, di india dikenal istilah Vasthu (Vidya) yg dapat disetarakan dgn (Ilmu) Arsitektur di belahan barat. sedangkan pelakunya yaitu arsiteknya punya bbrp sebutan yg artinya relatif sama artinya yaitu : sthapati, achariya, atau sutradhara. jadi ternyata kita sebagai bangsa Indonesia tdk perlu berkecil hati kan , karena kita ternyata memiliki akar budaya arsitektur yg murni dan kuat yg kita serap dari kebudayaan india tsb.

Arsitektur bukan lagi sekedar membangun fisik untuk keperluan manusia, tapi melibatkan aspek budaya yg terlibat didalamnya sehingga apabila kita pada saat ini masih melihat peninggalan berbagai bangsa kuno dari masa lampau masih berdiri tegar s/d saat ini itu meruapakan petunjuk bahwa bangsa tersebut telah memiliki peradaban yg tinggi pada saat itu karena arsitektur yg telah dicapai berbanding lurus dgn tinggat peradaban suatu bangsa. hal ini masih dapat kita lihat bagaimana bangsa yunani, romawi, mesir, china, india , nusantara, maya dll peninggalan arsitekturnya masi banyak yg berdiri kokoh sampai dengan saat ini.

Jadi singkat kata bagi masyarakat awam, ARSITEKTUR bisa dimaknai sebagai bangunan buatan manusia yg telah "ditiupkan jiwa kedalamnya".

Dunia arsitektur yg ada didunia ini sangat beragam disebabkan banyak faktor yg mempengaruhinya bisa bermacam2, misal :
> geografis : mesir yg tandus & berpadang pasir lebih cocok membangun suatu super struktur yg solid berupa piramida karena tersedia tambang batu granit dgn kualitas terbaik.
> kepercayaan : yunani yg memiliki banyak dewa yg serupa dgn manusia menurunkan skala arsitektur yg merupakan turunan dari dimensi tubuh manusia ideal itu sendiri ke dalam bangunannya yg terkenal dgn 3 gaya yaitu: The Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
> keadaan alam : jepang dgn alamnya yg labil karena terletak daerah pegunungan berapi dan mudah terjadi gempa, maka melahirkan arsitekturnya yg non rigid yg terbuat dari kayu berpasak sehingga fleksible. dll

Sedangkan ARSITEK adalah pelaku arsitektur itu sendiri, atau memakai istilah "si doel anak sekolahan", arsitek adalah tukang insinyur tentang ilmu arsitektur yg memahami kaidah estetika dalam perancangan dan pembangunannya.
